A sweep first. Repairs when they're needed.

Creosote, soot and nesting debris build up out of sight. A sweep removes them before they cause a smoky room, a bad smell or a chimney fire. Every sweep includes a look at the parts of the system we can see, and these services cover what that look turns up. See all our chimney services.

How a sweep visit works

  1. Tell us what you're seeing

Call or send the form with your town, the type of fireplace or stove, and anything you've noticed.

  2. The room is protected first

Drop cloths go down and the fireplace opening is sealed so soot stays in the flue, not on the furniture.

  3. The flue is brushed and vacuumed

Rods and brushes sized to the flue loosen deposits, and a vacuum collects them as the work goes.

  4. You see what we saw

We walk through the visible condition of the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue and cap.

  5. A plain next step

If something needs repair, you get the reason and the options, not a pressure pitch.

Built for Sussex County winters

Long heating seasons

Cold Sussex County winters mean fireplaces and stoves run for months, so deposits build faster than in milder places.

Freeze and thaw

Water that gets into brick and mortar freezes overnight and expands, which is how small cracks become loose bricks.

Wooded lots

Leaves, twigs and animals find open flues quickly when a house sits among trees or beside a lake.

Chimney sweep FAQ

How often should a chimney be swept?

Most wood-burning chimneys need a sweep once a year, and sooner if you burn every day through winter. The usual guide is a sweep once deposits reach about an eighth of an inch, because that is enough fuel for a chimney fire.

Does an oil furnace chimney need sweeping?

Yes. Oil burners leave soot and scale in the flue, and a partly blocked flue can push exhaust back into the house. Having it checked when the burner is serviced is a sensible habit.

Is the fireplace usable the same day?

Usually, yes. A routine sweep leaves the fireplace ready to use once the work is done, unless the visit turns up damage that should be repaired first.
